Today we welcomed Sara Amundson, Humane Society Legislative Fund President, to give us an introduction to a major topic that we’ve not delved into on Lunch + Legislation: promoting animal welfare bills in the U.S. House and Senate.
You can watch the interview here.
Sara’s experience dates back decades and she articulated the importance of advocacy for animals, some stories about Doris Day, and Sen. Gary Peters. She discussed several bills of importance:
- Two bills related to horse welfare, the SAFE Act, H.R. 3355 and the PAST Act, H.R. 5441;
- The Humane Cosmetic Act, introduced in both the U.S. House, H.R. 6207 and the U.S. Senate, S. 3357; and
- The China Trade Relations bill, H.R. 7193 in the House, which could include various animal protection measures.
She talked about the best way to meet your federal elected officials, and encouraged advocates to contact them and ask for their co-sponsorship of these bills (or thanks if they already have!)
Sara has agreed to return to Lunch + Legislation in the future because there is much more to discuss.
Be sure and keep up with legislation with AFA’s Legislative Tracker™.
