2023 Animal Law Conference Scholarship Program

The Attorneys for Animals (AFA) Animal Law Conference Scholarship program, now in its 4th year, is expanding to provide scholarships of $500 each to nine eligible students to attend in-person. The scholarship will cover attendees’ conference registration and contribute toward their travel expenses.
Scholarship Rules and Application Form
AFA, a Michigan-based non-profit dedicated to advancing animal law and policy through advocacy, education, and professional development, is offering up to 9 (nine) scholarships to attend the 31st Animal Law Conference in Los Angeles from Oct. 20-22. Visit the Animal Law Conference Website.
1. Application Process
Register by completing the form at the link below. You will be required to answer a question related to the Conference agenda (100 word maximum)
By submitting an application, you agree that if selected, you will make yourself reasonably available to meet with AFA representatives before and after the conference via zoom or telephone; to meet with other scholarship recipients during the conference; provide an image of yourself; provide a short review and evaluation after the Conference.
Registration opens Mon, Aug. 21, 2023, 3PM (all times Eastern Daylight Savings Time, US) and closes Fri., Sep. 22, 2023,11:59PM.
Scholarship recipients will be announced no later than Sun., Sep. 24, 2023, and will be notified via email.
Recipients are responsible for registering for the conference and must register on or before Wed., Sep. 27, 2023; if the recipient fails to register on or before Wed., Sep. 27, 2023, AFA reserves the right to select a recipient in his or her place. AFA will arrange for pre-payment of the conference fee and will provide instructions for scholarship recipients to register without cost.
Travel reimbursement: AFA will, upon receipt of proper documentation of expenses for travel, lodging, and food expenses incurred in attending the Conference, reimburse each recipient for up to $350. Each recipient agrees to attend the conference, and to make and pay for his or her own travel and lodging arrangements. All requests for travel reimbursement must be submitted on or before Tues., Oct. 31, 11:59PM, and on a form provided by AFA. AFA will process and pay all approved travel reimbursement requests on or before Tues., Nov. 21, 2023.
By submitting an application, applicants agree that, if selected for a scholarship, will attend substantially all of the conference, and will notify AFA if an emergency prevents them from doing so. Conference schedule and agenda (all Pacific times):
- Fri., Oct. 20: 6 to 8:30PM
- Sat., Oct. 21: 8AM to 8:30PM
- Sun. Oct. 22: 8:30AM to 1:30PM
2. Eligibility: The Scholarship program is open to:
- all law students, including those in masters or other post-J.D. programs, who are legal residents of the United States, including those attending law school outside the U.S., and who are enrolled in law school either at the time of application, or who will be so at the time of the conference.
- all students enrolled in a post-baccalaureate program of animal law and policy for non-lawyers, who are legal residents of the United States, including those attending school outside the U.S., and who are enrolled in school either at the time of application, or who will be so enrolled during the conference.
3. Scholarship Sponsor: The Sponsor is Attorneys for Animals, Inc., Canton, MI. The Conference presenters, Animal Legal Defense Fund and the Center for Animal Law Studies at Lewis & Clark Law School, and other Conference sponsors, are not affiliated with the Scholarship program.
4. Terms and Conditions: AFA reserves the right to refuse, withdraw, or disqualify any entry at any time at its sole discretion. By entering, you represent and warrant that you are eligible to participate based on eligibility requirements, and you agree to accept the decisions of AFA as final and binding. AFA has the sole discretion to select Scholarship recipients, and to modify, suspend, cancel, or terminate the Scholarship due to causes beyond its control that impact the security, fairness, proper conduct, or administration of the Scholarship.
5. Rights Granted by You: By submitting an entry, you understand and agree that AFA, its agents or licensees, where permitted by law and subject to the terms of AFA’s Privacy Policy, shall have the right to print, publish, broadcast, distribute and use in any media known now or hereafter developed, in perpetuity, worldwide, and without limitation, your submission and name for news, publicity, advertising, promotional purposes, trade, information, and public relations without any further notice, review, consent, compensation, or remuneration, unless prohibited by law.
6. Limitation of Liability: Your application constitutes your agreement to release and hold harmless AFA and its representatives, successors, agents, assigns, directors, employees, and officers against and from any and all claims, liability, illness, injury, death, litigation, loss, or damages that may occur, directly or indirectly from participation in the Scholarship program, including cancellation of the Conference, any type of technical failure, the unavailability or inaccessibility of any transmissions, phone, or Internet service.
7. Disputes: The Scholarship is governed by the laws of Michigan without respect to conflict of law doctrines.

9. Social Media: The Scholarship hosted by AFA is in no way sponsored, endorsed, administered by, or associated with Facebook, Twitter or other social media outlet used to publicize the Scholarship.
10. Agreement to Rules: All entrants agree to abide by the rules and decisions which are fully and unconditionally binding in all respects.
