Lunch + Legislation: Alicia Prygoski on Strategic Legislation (Part I)

The purpose of Lunch + Legislation is to think strategically about legislation, through a series of guests who provide insight into the process.

We are so pleased to welcome Alicia for Part I of a 2-part series (she’ll join us again on March 4, 2024), because her job is to work strategically: nationwide, on local, state, and federal legislation. “Wherever ALDF can help,” Alicia says.

Alicia and her team strategize in the fall, before most legislative sessions start in January. They determine “what issues are we going to spearhead, what bills are we going to try to get introduced. But at the same time, what bills are we looking out for, where do we think we’re going to be playing defense. How are we going to be able to operate in coalitions?”

This month’s interview focused on the big picture. Next month, Alicia will discuss how advocates can apply the concepts of strategic legislation in their own work on behalf of animals.

One of the things we really focus on is increasing our impact by reaching out to constituents, getting that grassroots angle … In certain situations, legislators really want to talk to the people they are representing, directly.
